Not to be too critical, but the thing I find most ironic about churchmarketingonline.com is that they talk a lot about SEO, design and marketing, but the site itself is so... not any of that. The white text on brown background is hard to read, the text is small, and the design looks like a site from the early 90s.

I am sure this is one of a range of things that makes a site effective. What I feel is particularly important is making the site accessible, indeed prioritized, to outsiders. At Internet Evangelism Day, we have tried to highlight this in our church website self-assessment tool:

Another thing few churches try, are blogs by members - evern on purely secular things such as local community concerns, which are linked to from the church site, and which link back to the church site. This strategy is covered in the excellent seminar on church sites you can watch here:
